Unlike the penis , the male homologue equivalent to the clitoris, it usually does not contain the distal portion or opening of the urethra and is therefore not used for urination. The clitoris also usually lacks a reproductive function. While few animals urinate through the clitoris or use it reproductively, the spotted hyena , which has an especially large clitoris, urinates, mates, and gives birth via the organ. Some other mammals, such as lemurs and spider monkeys , also have a large clitoris. The clitoris is the human female's most sensitive erogenous zone and generally the primary anatomical source of human female sexual pleasure.

It is situated beneath the anterior labial commissure, partially hidden between the anterior ends of the labia minora. The clitoris is encosed by a fascia composed by sheet of connective tissue. The clitoris is provided like the penis, with a suspensory ligament, and with two small muscles, the Ischiocavernosi, which are inserted into the crura of the clitoris.
There are also multiple non-genital peripheral anatomic structures involved in female sexual responses such as salivary and sweat glands, cutaneous blood vessels and nipples. The vagina consists of a tube of autonomically-innervated smooth muscle longitudinal outer, inner circular layer lined by stratified squamous epithelium and a sub-dermal layer rich in capillaries. The vaginal wall consists of an inner glandular mucous type stratified squamous cell epithelium supported by a thick lamina propia. This epithelium undergoes hormone-related cyclical changes including slight keratinization of the superficial cells during the menstrual cycle.
